It was hard not to cheer Vincenzo Nibali on for victory as he put in a well-timed attack on the Poggio in the 2018 edition of La Primavera. In recent years it's been a race for the sprinters as neither the Cipressa nor the Poggio softens up the field enough to prevent a bunch gallop to the line. It'd also been 12 years since the Tifosi had an Italian winner at La Classicissima in Pipo Pozzato. And while gloves were probably the last thing on the Shark of Messina's mind as he turned himself inside out to stay in front of the sprinters on the Via Roma, they certainly gave him all the grip he needed for his daredevil descent of the Poggio that set him up for victory.
