The benefits of carbon wheels versus aluminum are well-established. Riders enjoy increased stiffness, more precise handling, and less maintenance as the carbon rim does a better job of staying true. The downside is that when they fail, they may fail catastrophically, rendering the rim useless since it can't simply be bent back into shape like an aluminum rim. Fortunately Santa Cruz recently entered the carbon wheel game, and their goal was to build the strongest carbon wheels on the market. Through extensive testing to determine how carbon rims most commonly fail, they built a rim that would withstand the highest level of abuse. Now, the burly Santa Cruz Reserve wheels are available with revered Chris King hubs. Backed by Santa Cruz's legendary lifetime warranty, the Reserve 27 29in Chris King Boost Wheelset is a smart upgrade for your trail or all-mountain bike. Santa Cruz wasn't satisfied with the industry standards for testing carbon rims so in typical Santa Cruz fashion, they developed their own rigorous standards. Upon testing other carbon rims on the market, some of them failed at the bead due to impact, but another common downfall was the nipples pulling through the rim due to a sudden increase in spoke tension. To combat these failures, Santa Cruz designed the Reserve carbon rims with an extra thick bead wall and external spoke hole reinforcements, putting more material where it matters and using their expertise with carbon to create a stronger layup. Asymmetric spoke holes further improve wheel strength by equalizing spoke tension between the drive and non-drive sides. Santa Cruz assembles the wheels in house to ensure a quality build, and they use standard J-bend spokes ensuring you can find a replacement at a local bike shop if you're in a pinch. The rims are laced to beautifully machined, black-anodized Chris King hubs. These hubs are a precision instrument. They have 72 points of contact, providing 5-degree engagement for a near-instantaneous pedal...
