For riding in cool or cold conditions, it's extremely difficult to beat the practicality of a great vest. Element-proof materials that keep the wind and rain off of you go a very long way in preserving your overall comfort when the temperature drops. Their packability means convenience, too. All told, if you're sold, allow us to introduce the Assos sV. blitzFeder Men's Vest as an ultimate option for going sleeveless. In their forest of technical terms as the fabric wizards that they are, Assos refers to its vest formally as a "sleeveless shell." A vest in other words, but Assos is calling it the former to demonstrate how protective it is. Having a windproof barrier between your jersey and the outside gives more protection than a simple vest with a mesh back. The blitzFeder is better at releasing sweat vapor than most pieces, thanks to the new Foil043 fabric. It's feathery light and ultra-thin; ball it up and it easily fits in a jersey pocket. There's even a stuff sack sewn into the vest to make this especially possible. Assos calls the material a "natural windbreaker," which is its way of saying that there is no membrane applied in creating the windproof qualities of the material; the structure of the threads and the density of the weave make it so. A treatment is added to give the fabric water repellency, however. The fabric was also engineered not to rustle in the wind -- wizards, indeed. As with all Assos garments, the vest is designed for a snug fit, and it fits best when in the riding position. There is elastic at the shoulders and waist to minimize unwanted shifting, and it has elastic mesh inserts on the sides of the back and under the arms to allow some stretch. There are also reflective tabs on the shoulders and on either side of the waist for added visibility.
